Private label drinkware lives or dies on two things that rarely get enough attention: the product itself, and everything printed around it. A 40oz tumbler can be perfect and still get rejected at a retail distribution center because the case barcode was placed on a seam, or delayed at an Amazon prep station because the FNSKU sat on a curved surface. Custom packaging design is not decoration — it is the interface between your brand, your retailer and your customer's hand.
This guide walks through how custom packaging design works for private label drinkware, where barcode integration fits into the process, and what you should prepare before requesting a quote. We use a real Dingnuo product — the 40oz designer acrylic car mug with handle, lid and straw — as a working example throughout.
What "Custom Packaging" Actually Covers
In an OEM or private label project, "packaging" is not one item. It is usually four layers, and each has its own specification sheet:
- Primary packaging — the bag, sleeve, wrap or insert that touches the product itself.
- Retail packaging — the printed box, hang tag or display carton the shopper sees on shelf.
- Protective packaging — the egg crate, divider or molded insert that stops movement in transit.
- Master carton — the shipping unit, with its own dimensions, weight, carton marking and case-level barcode.
On Dingnuo's 40oz custom tumbler, the routine packing method is each unit wrapped in an OPP bag, placed in an egg crate, then a white box, then a master carton. Customized packaging is also acceptable — which is where private label work begins.
Start With the Product, Then Design the Box Around It
Packaging artwork should never be designed before the product spec is frozen. Dimensions, weight and shape determine the dieline, and the dieline determines where your logo, legal text and barcode can physically sit.

Two details in that table drive packaging decisions more than anything else. First, the handle and straw cap create an irregular silhouette — the retail box needs a cutout, a window or a generous internal cavity, not a tight rectangular fit. Second, at 26.4 cm tall and built to sit in a car cup holder, this is a product shoppers often want to see before buying, which pushes many private label buyers toward a windowed box or a printed sleeve rather than a fully closed carton.
The Custom Packaging Workflow, Step by Step
1. Lock the product specification
Material, capacity, lid type, color and logo placement all need to be final. Changing the product after the dieline is approved means redoing the dieline, the artwork and often the proof.
2. Choose the packaging structure
Folding carton, corrugated mailer, printed sleeve over the standard white box, or a retail-ready display case. This decision is driven by your sales channel: shelf retail, e-commerce, club store or subscription box.
3. Request the dieline
The dieline is the flat template showing cut lines, fold lines and glue flaps. Artwork is placed inside it — never the other way around. If your designer builds artwork first, expect to rebuild it.
4. Place artwork and logo printing
Front panel, side panels, back panel with legal and care copy, plus logo printing on the product itself if the tumbler is to be branded. Dingnuo's 40oz mug supports customized color and custom service, so product branding and packaging branding can be aligned in one project.
5. Integrate barcodes
This step is covered in detail below. It should happen after the dieline is fixed and before the proof is approved.
6. Proof and approve
Approve a physical or digital proof of the artwork placed in the dieline. Confirm color, copy, font rendering and barcode position. Get the sign-off in writing.
7. Produce and inspect
Printing, packing and carton marking. Barcodes should be test-scanned before the shipment leaves the factory, not after it arrives at a warehouse.
Barcode Integration: The Details That Break Shipments
Barcodes are the least glamorous part of private label packaging and the most common cause of retail chargebacks. There are two separate barcode conversations in every order: the barcode on the consumer unit, and the barcode on the master carton.
| Barcode | Typical use | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| UPC-A (12 digits) | Retail point of sale in the USA and Canada | Consumer unit |
| EAN-13 (13 digits) | Retail point of sale in Europe, Japan and other markets | Consumer unit |
| ITF-14 / GTIN-14 | Case-level scanning for distributors and retail DCs | Master carton |
| FNSKU | Amazon FBA unit labeling | Each sellable unit |
| Code 128 / GS1-128 | Internal logistics, batch, date or serial data | Carton or applied label |
Who supplies the barcode number
The brand owner does. Barcode numbers come from a GS1 prefix, from a retailer that issues its own numbers, or from a marketplace such as Amazon for FNSKU labels. The factory prints or applies what you supply — it does not generate your GTINs for you. Send the number as a verified string plus a vector barcode file, and state the exact symbology.
The five technical requirements buyers forget
- Quiet zone. The blank margin on each side of the barcode must stay blank. Logo elements, borders and photographic backgrounds creeping into the quiet zone are a frequent cause of scan failure.
- Size and magnification. Barcodes are specified as a percentage of nominal size. Shrinking a barcode to fit a small side panel drops it below the scannable range.
- Contrast and substrate. Bars must be dark and the background light, with high contrast. Direct printing on a glossy or highly reflective surface — a real risk on drinkware-adjacent packaging — can defeat a scanner even when the barcode looks perfect to the eye.
- Placement. Keep the barcode off fold lines, glue flaps, corners, seams and curved surfaces. A slight curve is enough to distort bar widths at the reading angle.
- Orientation and truncation. Do not shorten bar height to make room for other elements. Truncated barcodes fail in the real world.
Printed barcode or applied label?
Printed directly into the packaging artwork is cleaner and cheaper at volume, and it suits a fixed private label program. Applied labels are more flexible — useful for trial runs, for repackaging, or when a retailer or marketplace requires a specific label format. For Amazon FBA in particular, many sellers choose preprinted FNSKU labels or a hybrid approach, because FBA requirements can change after the carton artwork is already printed.
Carton-level integration
Your master carton needs its own ITF-14 or GTIN-14, plus the human-readable carton marking: product name, item number, quantity, gross and net weight, dimensions, country of origin and handling symbols. When a private label program scales, this is the layer that determines how fast a distribution center can receive it. Note that removing the individual white box to reduce packaging volume changes the pack quantity per carton and therefore the carton barcode — so decide the packaging structure before you assign GTINs.
Logo Printing and Color Matching
Private label projects usually involve two color systems running in parallel: the product color and the packaging color. On the 40oz custom tumbler, color is fully customizable, with listed options including Sky Blue, Clear Black, White, Violet and Yellow. Your packaging artwork will reference its own colors — often a brand Pantone — and those two must be reviewed together, because a packaging color that clashes with the product color undermines the shelf impression.
Two practical rules: approve color against a physical proof rather than a monitor, and keep the logo file in vector format with clear space defined around it.
MOQ, Samples and Lead Times to Plan Around
Custom packaging affects all three, so build them into your launch calendar early.
- MOQ: 3000 pcs per item is the normal minimum. Small trial orders are accepted via Alibaba, and many key accounts order full container loads every batch.
- Samples: The product specification lists sample timing at 7–15 days. The FAQ notes that samples without any customization are generally available within 1–3 days, while samples with customization generally take 5–10 days depending on detailed requirements. Sample cost is sometimes refundable; freight is always paid by the receiver.
- Production: Generally 15–25 days depending on order details and the real-time production schedule at the time the order is placed. The product specification lists a lead time of 15–30 days.
If your launch date is fixed, work backwards from the delivery date, not forwards from the order date. Packaging artwork approval is the step most likely to slip, because it depends on files coming from your side.
Shipping and Carton Strategy
Dingnuo ships by express, by sea and by train. Each mode implies a different packaging brief. Air and express shipments reward lower unit weight and compact boxes; sea freight rewards a strong master carton and efficient palletization; rail sits between the two. Decide the transport mode before finalizing the carton dimensions, because it directly affects how many units fit on a pallet and what the landed cost per unit looks like.
Previewing Your Custom Design
Buyers who want to see customization options before committing to a sample can use the online 3D customization feature on the site, which offers a set of models to preview. It is a fast way to align internal stakeholders on color and layout direction before the formal sampling stage begins.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you print our barcode as part of the custom packaging?
Customized packaging is acceptable, and barcode artwork is part of that artwork package. Supply your barcode number and a vector barcode file, specify the symbology (UPC-A, EAN-13, ITF-14 or FNSKU), and confirm placement against the approved dieline.
Do you offer both product customization and packaging customization?
Yes. The 40oz tumbler supports customized color and custom service, and customized packaging is acceptable alongside the routine OPP bag, egg crate and white box packing. Logo printing on the product and on the packaging can be planned together.
What is the MOQ for a private label order?
The normal MOQ is 3000 pcs per item. Small trial orders are accepted via Alibaba.
How long does a customized sample take?
Customized samples generally take 5–10 days depending on requirements; the product specification lists sample timing at 7–15 days. Non-customized samples are usually available within 1–3 days. Sample cost is sometimes refundable, and freight is always paid by the receiver.
Is the product safe and compliant for food contact?
The product is BPA free. Confirm the documentation your destination market requires with the Dingnuo team during the quotation stage.
